FBAR for a Wise multi-currency account
A Wise account holds several currency balances, each with its own statement. For the FBAR you need one maximum value per account in US dollars. The practical way: find the peak of each currency balance from its statement, convert each at the Treasury December 31 rate, and add them. Whether a Wise account is a foreign account for you is not decided here: check FinCEN's instructions.
Open the fbar maximum value finder
1. Download one statement per currency
Wise statements list every transaction with the running balance after it (the Wise balance statement documentation shows the running balance and the formats: CSV, XLSX, PDF, JSON, CAMT.053, MT940, QIF, up to 469 days per statement). Download the full year for each currency you held.
2. Find each balance's peak, convert, add
| Balance | Peak | Rate | US$ |
|---|---|---|---|
| EUR | 4,200 | 0.851 | $4,935.37 |
| GBP | 2,600 | 0.743 | $3,499.33 |
| USD | 1,500 | 1 | $1,500.00 |
| Account | $9,934.70 → $9,935 |
Record all amounts as U.S. Dollar amounts rounded up to the next whole dollar. The amount $15,265.25 would be recorded as $15,266.
3. Load the files
In the maximum value finder, load each currency's CSV (or JSON) and give them the same account name: the tool detects the date and running balance columns, reads the currency and adds the balances into one account. Nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I report each Wise currency balance separately?
- FinCEN values each account separately ("The maximum value of an account is a reasonable approximation of the greatest value of currency or nonmonetary assets in the account during the calendar year. Periodic account statements may be relied on if they fairly reflect the maximum account value. Each account is valued separately.") but does not address multi-currency accounts on its maximum value page. Adding the converted peak of each balance gives one value per account that is never lower than the account's true peak.
- Which Wise statement do I need?
- A balance statement for each currency, covering the whole calendar year. Wise offers CSV, XLSX, PDF, JSON, CAMT.053, MT940 and QIF; CSV or JSON load straight into the finder.
- Which exchange rate do I use for a Wise balance?
- Convert the maximum account value of each account into US dollars at the Treasury's rate for the last day of the calendar year.
- Is Wise a foreign account for the FBAR?
- It depends on where the account is held. This site does not decide it; check FinCEN's instructions or a professional.
