FBAR threshold check

Type the highest balance each foreign account reached during the year, in its own currency. The check converts each at the Treasury December 31 rate, rounds up and adds them: an FBAR is due when the total is over $10,000.

Result

Type the highest balance of each foreign account in its own currency.

How it works

The test is on the aggregate: every foreign account's maximum value added, not any single balance and not the balances on one day. Two accounts that each peaked at $6,000 in different months still add to $12,000.

At the December 31, 2025 rates, $10,000 is 8,510 EUR or 7,430 GBP.

The maximum value of an account is a reasonable approximation of the greatest value of currency or nonmonetary assets in the account during the calendar year. Periodic account statements may be relied on if they fairly reflect the maximum account value. Each account is valued separately.

For each account keep the name on the account, the account number, the name and address of the foreign bank, the type of account and the maximum value during the year, for five years from the due date of the FBAR.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum amount to file an FBAR?
There is no minimum per account: the FBAR is due when the aggregate of your foreign accounts' maximum values exceeds $10,000 at any time during the calendar year.
Is it exactly $10,000 or more than $10,000?
More than $10,000. An aggregate of exactly $10,000 does not require an FBAR.
Do I add up the balances of all my accounts?
Yes: the maximum value of each account during the year, added together, even if the peaks were on different days.
Do I count accounts with small balances?
They count toward the aggregate. If the FBAR is due, each reportable account goes on it, whatever its own value.
I don't know my highest balance. What now?
Load the statements in the maximum value finder on the home page: it finds the peak and its date for you.
